What do people REALLY think about you? What ARE they saying about you?
How do people describe you to their friends?
What do they think of your work?
How would they describe you to your colleagues? Or to prospective customers?
How would you ever find out?
It’s not easy to get true, honest feedback. People often feel bad about criticizing – so they don’t tell you the truth to your face – in case you get angry or defensive. Think of when you have been asked in a restaurant: “How is your meal?” and you have said “Fine, Thank you” rather than admit the food was cold, too salty or badly cooked. You deny them the chance to learn from their mistakes and do better. And you never go back…
I recently asked for a testimonial from a client. I wanted something to put on my website. So other people could get a taste of what it is like to work with me. Even though I have known him for nearly two years, I was still a little nervous. I had asked for his honest feedback after all…
And what I received today was a real eye-opener.
WOW! I was speechless. (And that does not happen often!)
Do you have the courage to give honest feedback when it is asked for? Do you ask for the truth from others around you?
If not, why not?
