It’s Monday morning…

Late November and the weather is cold and grey. But you have a hot drink by your side. And your journal open on the table.

What a good time to take stock of where you are in your life

To think about what this year has brought you in terms of highs and lows, opportunities, challenges, risks and adventures.

To look back over the preceding months and count up all the times you chose well. And to see all the times you reverted to your old habits and unhelpful ways.

Was 2017 a Year to Remember? Did it bring joy to you? Or to others around you? Were you able to lift people’s spirits? Or did you drown in your sorrows?

Did you feel purposeful and driven? Or tired and defeated? Did you have clear goals and activities which excited you? Or a long To Do List of boring chores and obligations?

You may not believe this but the year you have experienced is the one you invited into your life… by the choices you made or didn’t make…

You choose who to spend your time with… If they are gloomy, negative and you feel drained by their company, that is your choice. You have a choice to join them in their negativity or to change the conversation to happier topics and lift their mood. And if that seems impossible, then you have a choice to make some new friends…

You choose what you eat or drink… If it is unhealthy and creating problems for your body, that is your choice. No-one can make you eat or drink something you don’t want to do. If friends and family are a bad influence on you, you can choose to say No. However hard that may seem, you can ask for what you need, to make healthier choices and to nurture yourself…

You choose where to spend your time… If you feel you are wasting your time or not getting on with things, and then beating yourself up about it afterwards, maybe you are tired? Maybe you need to have proper rest? Maybe you need to get more sleep? Or maybe you need to find new things to fill your time…

You choose what news and entertainments to watch… If these are violent, depressing, filled with despair, lack hope and are full of judgement and gossip, stop watching them. Choose only to fill your mind with kind thoughts, hope and good news about people who are helping others and making a difference.

Every day, every choice you make takes you through another day. To rise early and get busy. Or to pull the covers over your head and stay in bed. To go for a walk or get some exercise. Or to sit on the couch and eat. To go somewhere new and make new friends. Or to stay at home and feel lonely…

It is time for you to take stock?

Sometimes it is helpful to take stock with another person. Someone who doesn’t know your story about yourself. Someone who wants the best for you… even if you cannot believe that you can have it.

A good friend or a coach can help you to see yourself in a new way. To be inspired and empowered to make the changes you need to make in your health, work, home, relationships and finances.
